Google tricks and SEO terminology

Common terminologies in SEO and SEO tools.

Lesson one of Search engine Optimization. Today we will learn some SEO concepts and lean to use some SEO tools. I will also tell you some google commands that most people are not aware of.

There are mainly two types of optimization techniques:

1. On page optimization

2. Off page optimization

Before we start with one of these techniques I will make you familiar with some terminologies. Please pay attention to what I am discussing below. They will be used in all the future lessons that are to follow.

Common SEO terminologies

Search Engines:When I say google I will refer in general to all major search engines like google, Yahoo, MSN ,astalavista and overture. I dont think I will have to explain what is a search engine.

Keywords:A keyword is a word or a group of words that a surfer types in the search box to find some information about them. See the image below. We will do our optimization for google and the rest of the search engines will also show the results.

Results:when you search for a keyword on google then it shows a list of sites matching your search. These are called results. See image below.

top rank in google search

Page Rank: this is a rank assigned to every page or site that is cached by google or other ranking sites like Alexa. Google is most important of all sites and assigns a rank between 1 and 10 to each page of your site. Alexa gives one rank to the whole site based on traffic volume. Page rank is a meter that tell the visitors how popular is you site/page. We will discuss this feature in more details latter when we get into “Off page optimization Techniques”.

google tool bar page rank

Now some google search commands for you.

You may use these features directly from your browser if you have a google toolbar installed. If you don't have one get it here now. Its free.

This display of Page Rank in google tool bar is for www.alexa.com which has a 7/10 rating and this is very good. Now lets get some more information about Alexa.

Command to check if a particular page is indexed “cache:<page url>

Type in the google search box - “cache:http://www.alexa.com” . That you will get will look some thing like the image below. This is google cache ( memory) of how this site is and its content on the basis of which it searches the page.

Now on the top text block that is in multi color find the link “cached text” and open it by clicking.
This will show you how google's robot ( crawler) views your site and matches your keywords. This part is very important for search engine optimization. There are many tools available for this purpose if you want to analyze how your page will look when it is indexed by google.

Command to find backward links: “link:<page url>

Type in the search box “link:http://www.yatra.com/”
this result will tell you how many sites or pages are pointing to yatra.com site. In other words there are 469 web pages that have a link to www.yatra.com. These are called back links and they are the reason why PR ( page rank) increases. More on this latter in off page optimization topic.

Command to find the list of pages in your site that Google has indexed "site:<domain url>"

Type this command e.g site:http://www.yatra.com/ in the google search box.
You will now see that yatra has got around 3000 pages indexed. Test it on your blog or site. No doubt you get less traffic than yatra. Ok now you know quite some stuff about SEO. Its time we started the real work. You may try thse commands without "http://www." in the url part and get different but more accurate results. All these commands are also valid in Yahoo too.

Command to find the list of pages on Google's list that have some particular word or phrase in the title "allintilte:<key word>"

Type this command e.g "allintitle:merit iit" in the google search box without the double quotes.
The result that is before you is the list of all site that have "merit iit" in their title tag. Ohter tags in the same category are allintext which will give you the list of sites that have a particular word or phrase in their body text. These are very effective commands to implement SEO which I will discuss in the next lesson. So stay tuned. So If you have time now then continue to the next lesson.
